TOEIC 은 Test Of English for International Communication의 약자로 영어가 모국어가 아닌 사람들을 대상으로 언어 본래의 기능인 ‘커뮤니케이션’ 능력에 중점을 두고 일상생활 또는 국제업무 등에 필요한 실용영어 능력을 평가하는 시험이다.
1979년 미국 ETS(Educational Testing Service)에 의해 개발된 이래 전세계 약 60여 개 국가 4,000여 기관에서 승진 또는 해외파견 인원선발 등의 목적으로 널리 활용되고 있으며 우리나라에는 1982년 도입되었다. 현재 전 세계적으로 해마다 약 400만 명 이상이 응시하고 있다. 또한 모든 응시자에 대해 타당한 시험이 될 수 있도록 다음과 같은 기준을 적용하고 있다.
* 어휘, 문법, 관용어 중에서 미국 영어에만 쓰이는 특정한 것은 피한다.
* 특정 문화에만 해당되거나 일부 문화권의 응시자에게는 생소할 수 있는 상황은 피한다.
* 여러 나라 사람의 이름을 고르게 등장시킨다.
* 특정 직업 분야에만 해당되는 상황은 피한다.
* 다양한 문화와 성에 대한 편견이 없도록 유의한다.
